Company Update:
Tencent was among the names added to the US Pentagon blacklist of companies linked to the China’s military. While this Pentagon’s blacklist doesn’t carry any specific sanctions, it discourages US firms to trade with companies on the list. Tencent's stock dropped 7% and so did Prosus (its holding company with 82% of the GAV in Tencent).
Tencent dismissed the move as a “manifest error,” emphasizing it is not a military company, but the decision highlights escalating trade tensions with Washington. This underscores that Prosus, despite its diversification efforts, is still fundamentally tied to Tencent, making it a risky bet.
Expert Opinion:
Prosus is a play on Tencent with very limited diversification. We have no view on the intrinsic value of Tencent, but the US/China relationship is a negative for the company.
