Sinking France

Douce France has met its masters in the bond market. Its politicians, with presidential and parliamentary elections looming, are in no hurry to spend political capital telling voters the truth about spending cuts. A budget deficit swelling past 5.4% of GDP in 2026 is pushing public debt into the 120% band. Is fear of a crisis legitimate? The bond market seems to think so.

The pummelling of France has begun in earnest, eight months before the presidential race. On 7 October 2026 Paris was paying 4.9% to borrow for ten years, 130bp more than in midsummer.

French debt? Non, merci

For French equities, this is a film investors have seen before, and the plot rarely changes:

1) Short the flag: sell the large French issuers, or simply the CAC 40, a price index that ignores dividends and so always looks rather limp
2) Short the banks, whose travails distil everything that is, or might be, going wrong in the French real economy
3) Dump luxury because it is ‘so French’, never mind that its customers are mostly somewhere else
4) Go back to step 1, as the banks drag the large caps down with them in a self-sustaining doom loop
5) Take the short money off the table when the ECB or the IMF eventually rides to the rescue.

The pain: sentiment

Equity researchers to the bone, AlphaValue’s analysts cannot help spotting deep value once the dust settles, presumably by June 2027, when the electoral calendar has run its course.

The gain: fundamentals

The stocks below are classic buy-on-weakness names, the widows-and-orphans holdings that patient investors may want to focus on. The list reaches beyond the CAC 40 and counts as French those companies that tried to escape the curse of the flag by moving their headquarters to Amsterdam. To no avail.

The pecking order is set by the quality of the business model (our ‘Fundamental Strength’ score), and we kept only businesses showing upside on conventional valuation metrics. Yield was not a selection criterion, but it may well prove a welcome cushion while investors wait.

French stocks: not as bad as all that
